Microscope slide box
A Box for three microscope slides - the slides are marked AST1029.24.
This box of microscope slides comes from a 15-drawer cabinet found in the Herschel family home in the 1950s. The contents of this and a similar cabinet seem to suggest that they were used by successive generations of the family to store specimens, material and apparatus for carrying out experiments.
The microscope slides are described in the entry for AST1029.24 but in summary these are thought to have been made by Joseph Swan and given to Alexander Stewart Herschel as a means of explaining the science behind Swan's electric light bulb.
