Gardner 1-Barrel
Gardner machine gun consisting of one barrel mounted on a tripod. The ammunition is fed into the gun by means of a vertical magazine or hopper As the crank is revolved, a feed arm takes one of the cartridges, positions it in front of the breech and the bolt then closes and fires. The calibre is 0.45in. Inscribed on the gun is the following: 'CARTRIDGE MACHINE GUNS .45 NO 5 1882 GARDNER'S PATENT'. The Gardner gun (both one and two barrel versions) were adopted by the Royal Navy in 1880 and used alongside the Gatling gun in the Sudan Campaign.
