Clock
A chiming musical mahogany table clock by Alexander Glass of London, made circa 1770
The three-train movement has simple foliate engraving to the unsigned backplate, verge escapement and plays one of two tunes hourly. The case has a vibrant flame mahogany veneer, shaped door and corresponding brass moulding and dial. The shaped dial has rococo spandrels, silvered and engraved dial centre with two subsidiary dials to the arch for tune selection and chime/not chime. The makers signature is engraved onto a recessed cartouche.
Alexander Glass is unrecorded as a clockmaker and it is likely that he acted as the retailer only. English clocks of this type were very popular throughout Europe and many makers/retailers exploited this lucrative market.
