Model birchbark canoe
Model birchbark canoe, part of a collection of ethnographical material made by Admiral Sir George Back (1796-1878). The canoe originally had six cross bars and is sewn with spruce root.The making of model canoes with figures was associated with Catholic convents in Quebec. The nuns made the figures and the canoes themselves were made by local Indian people.
