John Leake, MD.
An oval half-length portrait of the man-midwife John Leake (1729–1792) in a plain coat and wig. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘John Leake. M.D.’, and the production details: ‘D. Gardner pinxt. / From F. Bartolozzi.’ Signed in pen and ink at the bottom of the image ‘J[?] F B sc.’ This print was etched after Francesco Bartolozzi’s stipple engraved of a portrait by the artist Daniel Gardner. Bartolozzi’s original print was published in 1781 as the frontispiece to the first volume of Leake’s ‘Medical Instructions Towards the Prevention and Cure of Chronic Diseases peculiar to Women’, fifth edition (London: R. Baldwin and H. Payne, 1781). This etching was perhaps produced by one of Bartolozzi’s pupils or studio assistants as a practice exercise. (Updated May 2019.)
