House flag, Isle of Man Steam Packet Co. Ltd
The House flag of the Isle of Man Steam Packet Co. Ltd, Douglas, Isle of Man. A red rectangular flag with the legs of a man in gold in the centre, flanked by the initials 'IOM' and 'SPC'. The flag is made of a wool and synthetic fibre bunting. The motifs are cotton and the whole flag is machine sewn. A rope and toggle is attached.
The company was formed in 1829 as the Mona’s Isle Company, then it became the Isle of Man United Steam Packet Company and finally changed its name to the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company in 1832, it became a limited company in 1885. The company’s vessels carried passengers, mail and goods between Douglas and Liverpool. Its ships were wooden and then iron paddle steamers which gave way to single, twin and triple-screw steamers, then turbine and diesel powered vessels.
The company joined London-Midland-Scottish Railways as a partner in a freight service - Railway Air Services, later known as The Manx Airway, then the Isle of Man Air Services Ltd. This was taken over by British European Airways in 1947.
Car ferries were introduced 1962 and a Ro-Ro service between Liverpool and Douglas in 1981. Services ran between Douglas and Liverpool, Heysham, Belfast and Dublin, using fastcraft seacats and conventional vessels. The company also provided services to Fleetwood, Ramsey to Whitehaven, Ardrossan, Blackpool, Greenore, Workington, Garliestown (Scotland), Dublin and Llandudno. In 2005 it was owned by Montagu Private Equity Ltd having been a subsidiary company of Sea Containers Ltd.
