Shark's tooth dagger
Shark's tooth dagger from Kiribati (formerly the Gilbert Islands), probably collected by Commander Frederick Willoughby Shortland (1853-1931) who served as a midshipman on HMS 'Basilisk' under Captain John Moresby, during hydrographic surveys in the Pacific during the 1870s. 'Basilisk' called at Funafuti in the neighbouring Ellice Islands (now Tuvalu) on 13 July 1872 and the dagger may have been acquired there.
