Table

Mahogany supper table with tripod base. The top features eight circular glass-stands and a quatrefoil centre with ornamental brass inlay. Standing on centre reeded pillar and tripod support with scroll feet. the top folds down. There is a brass plaque with an inscription.

According to the 'Life of Lord Hill', by the Reverend Edwin Sidney, 'It is said that shortly before Lord Nelson left England, he dined with his friend Lord Sidmouth, and after dinner, sitting near a small table he drew out his plan upon it, saying: "I shall attack in two lines, led by myself and Collingwood, and I am confident I shall capture either their Van and Centre, or their Centre and Rear.” The table was afterwards marked with an inscription by Lord Sidmouth.' Henry Addington, Viscount Sidmouth (1757-1844), was Britain's Prime Minister, 1801-04, between the younger Pitt's two administrations.
