Chest of drawers
This three-drawer chest is veneered with mahogany and has ivory shield-shaped escutcheons. The brass handles, which feature Nelson in profile, are taken from a portrait (later a popular print) by Simon de Koster. Nelson sat for this portrait in December 1800, before leaving for what would be the Battle of Copenhagen. The chest may have originally been sold with these handles or they may have been added by the owner as a commemorative object of either Nelson’s victory at Copenhagen or his death at Trafalgar on 21 October 1805.
