Sea chest

Sea chest belonging to Captain David Bruce Nicol RN (1888-1973). It is made of yellow pine with a Scots pine base and is covered with canvas. It is painted with white sides and a black lid and base. A brass plaque on the lid is inscribed: 'D.B. Nicoll RN.' In the lid are fittings for stowing a telescope, dirk, parallel rulers, gunters scale, hinged looking glass and candle sconce. The lower part of the chest is divided by wooden slides into two wide and one narrow compartment (the two wide for washable articles and uniform and civilian clothes respectiveley, the narrow for boots, sea boots, oil skins etc.) The upper part has two wooden trays and a lidded locked box (one of the large trays originally had a close-fitting enamel iron box with a lid in which was a tray containing a basin, toothbrush tray, soap dish an tooth mug all in enamelled iron).
