Writing box
Nelson's brass-bound writing box, made from timber of 'L'Orient'. A brass plaque on the lid is inscribed: 'Part of L'Orient blown up at the Battle of the Nile 1st August 1798. In Lord Nelson's possession at the time of his death 21st October 1805.'
Brass bound corners, brass lock plate and recessed handles. Inside, a green baize covered writing slope, pen tray and three compartments containing two glass ink bottles with silver lids, two keys and a quill. A slim drawer in the base contains a small bottle, toothpowder and an ivory handled brush.
The tooth powder box , a comb, a small glass bottle with silver top, a nail brush , and a hair brush are stored separately and are part numbered AAA3398.1 - .5.
