The Gunners
A formal group photograph of the Gunners. This photograph was taken sometime between March and June 1916. Seated in the foreground from left to right are Gunner Instructor C E Bounton, Carpenter A J Griffiths and Gunner E J Bagnall. From left to right behind them are Gunner Instructor J McDermott, Gunner (T) R Chapman, Gunner Instructor T C S Lee and Gunner Instructor E G J Nightingale. The coal shovel mounted on the wall to the left with 'Lest We Forget' carved into the handle celebrates the fact that, as an oil-fuelled ship, HMS Queen Elizabeth's crew were spared the rigours of coaling ship while in harbour. The photograph was taken on the starboard side of the upper deck just forward of 'X' turret barbette.
