HMS Queen Elizabeth (1915)

The compass platform of HMS Queen Elizabeth (1913), seen from the foretop directly above. The three men at the front end of the compass platform are (from left to right) Midshipman Cecil E C Robinson, Lieutenant Harold R G Kinahan and Captain Melville S Innes RM. The Lieutenant taking a bearing from the azimuth compass has not been identified. Eight other men are visible on the shelter and forecastle decks.

This image is remarkable for the clearly visible details, considering it was taken in very windy conditions from a high point of a ship travelling at speed. The main and azimuth compasses can be clearly seen, as can the portale range finder mounted on the port side of the platform and the navigator's folding chart table behind Captain Innes RM. Other details of interest are the rangefinder hood on 'B' turret, the Maxim and 3-pounder saluting guns on the shelter deck, and the barrels of the 6-inch secondary guns protruding from the upper deck casemates.

A print from this negative is also in album ALB0018 (image 18/21).
