Whale tooth
A sperm whale tooth engraved with a sailing vessel in heavy seas having lost her foremast entitled: 'Ship Pacific off the Cape of Good Hope'. The reverse shows the same ship in calm seas. A wavy foliage branch goes round the tope of the tooth. This type of seamen's craftwork is known as scrimshaw. The 'Pacific' is probably the vessel of that name built in 1826. She was a ship-rigged 347-ton vessel, owned by Bennett & Co, operating in the southern oceans from the port of London.
