Pocket watch with 18ct yellow gold open face case which belonged to Sir John Franklin (1786-1847) the Arctic explorer. Thirty hour duration, English, single train four pillar gilt brass fusee movement with verge escapement. Polished flat steel balance with flat spiral balance spring. Engraved balance cock with grotesque mask. Diamond endstone in blued-steel setting. Boseley regulator. Potence plate engraved 'No 544'. Barrel bridge re-finished (gilding removed). Four colour gold dial with engine turned border, raised polished Roman numerals and engraved dial centre with winding hole below XII. Blued-steel spade hour hand and blued-steel moon minute hand (broken). Both hands probably replacements. 18ct gold open face case, hallmarked 'London 1819-1820' with makers incuse stamp 'I.R.' (James Richards?), also stamped 'R' and scratched '11028'. Sprung gold bezel with convex glass covering dial. Case has reeded edge and engine turned back. Simple ring bow.
