Glass bottle. Empty bottle originally labelled ‘Spirit Rect’. Spiritus Rectus. Most likely alcohol or an alcoholic solution used to dissolve other materia medica to make tinctures. I.e. in A dictionary of practical medicine, Volume 2, ‘Appendix of Formulae – Tinctura’, 1833, p. XXIV, we find a recipe for Spiritus Therebinthinatusm used in jaundice, requiring, among others, Spirit. Vini Rect. - spirit of wine (something similar is still used in another form in medicine today, namely rectified ethyl alcohol).
