Sketchbook (possibly Wales, with Spanish/Italian subjects)
Green leatherette with pencil holder, green leather binding with gold bands and tooling, button closure (missing) and label of Winsor and Newton, 38 Rathbone Place (7 3/8 x 10 1/4). Inscribed in front 'Esplanade' and signed 'C Stanfield'; several sketches of rocky coastal scenery with small chapels (certainly UK: possibly St Govan's Chapel at St Govan's Head, Pembroke). Compositional sketches for pictures of Mediterranean or Spanish fishermen landing boats under a tower and near a fortress (possibly Fort of Socoa, St Jean de Luz, or ‘Fortress of Savona’, Liguria: oil on London market 2003); a sketch head, a sheer legs/winch, buildings. From the studio collection of Clarkson Stanfield RA, acquired 9.04 (Bagshawe Collection). [PvdM 5.06]
