The Kitchen of the Inn at Amalfi
Untitled laid-down lithograph whose subject appears to correspond with the oil entitled 'The Kitchen of the Inn at Amalfi' exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1842 and now untraced. The Capuchin convent at Amalfi, of which there are some recorded sketches by Stanfield, functioned as an inn (as did many other religious houses) at the time Stanfield was in Italy at the turn of 1838-39, and it appears to be where he stayed while making local expeditions from Naples. Its relevance to NMM, other than being a significant work by this important marine and landscape artist, is that it is from the Bagshawe Collection of his residual studio material (acq. 9.04). This also contains many of the miniature ceramic pots, fruit and vegetable models which seem to have been used in its composition, which the print therefore complements. It is also, at time of writing, the only known copy of the print and thus a record of the now untraced painting. [PvdM 6.05]
