Gun, 24pdr

Iron muzzle-loading smoothbore 24-pdr gun mounted on an iron 19th-century garrison-pattern carriage. Marks: Crown over rose. This gun was recovered from St Mary's Creek, river Medway at Chatham from the wreck of the 'Matthias', 44 guns which had been captured from the Dutch in 1653 and was later burnt by a Dutch fireship in de Ruyter's attack on the Thames and Medway in 1667.
