Parrying shield, Australian aboriginal. A rough wooden shield, with a handgrip carved into back. Collected by Sir John Franklin or his wife Jane, while he was governor of Van Diemens Land (Tasmania). Mounted as part a trophy with Aboriginal bows and a Maori taiaha (challenge stick).
