Medal commemorating the Battle of Doggerbank, 1781. Obverse: Stern view of the British and Dutch flagships in action (other ships in the background), the former veering away; inscription proceeding from the latter. Inscription: 'HOEZEE! DE BRIT RUIMT ZEE.' (Hurrah! the British have evacuated the sea). Exergue: 'OP DEN VYFDEN DER OOGSTM . 1781 .' (On 5 August 1781). Reverse: Above, naval crown, below, laurel wreath. Inscription: 'O BATAVIER . GOD STAAFT UW REGT : DAAR ZOUTMAN MET ZIJN HELDEN VEGT . HERSTELT HIJDE EER DER VRIJE VLAG . TROTS OVERMAGT . IN EENEN SLAG .' (Oh! Batavians. God supports your rights, Zoutman fights, with his heroes; restores the honour of the free flag, in spite of superior might, at one blow.) This action was fought between the Flora and Crescent (British) and the Castor and Briel (Dutch) frigates.
