Drawing

No scale. A drawing of an object of undefined purpose modelled on Vitruvian principles.

The accompanying explanation reads: "The Nature of the Eye, of the Voluta in the Janico, Capitet [?] with the Centre for Sweeping on Forming the said Voluta, whose diam. is 1/8 Part of its height. That is the Height being divided into Eight Parts 1 of them is its Bigness, and the Centre of the Eye is Placed, between the 3rd and 4th Division, beginning to number from below."

An annotation "According to Vitruvius" is beneath the drawing of the object.

It is possible that this plan's purpose was instructional, as Vitruvian curves were applied to the process of draughting ornamental scrollwork. See CHN0131 for an example of this.
