Experiment (1784); Royall Escape [Royal Escape] (1660)
Scale 1:24 (front) and 1:48 (reverse). A double sided plan showing two vessels of mercantile origin. The front shows the body, tables of dimensional data, profile with sheer lines and a combined longitudinal half-breadth and arrangement of the upper deck of the Experiment (1784), a sloop. The plan has been signed by Samuel Spalding and dated February 1784. Annotations on the drawing indicate that the vessel was lengthened while building, a modification further illustrated by alterations to the plan in pencil. The heading note on the plan stated that the ship was built at Sandgate and launched on 19 June 1784.
The reverse of the plan shows the planking expansion, body, inboard profile and longitudinal half-breadth with upper deck detail of the Royall Escape [Royal Escape] (1660), a smack. The presence of upper deck ports and a decorated cabin window suggest this plan shows her as she was to have been rebuilt in 1714.
