Medal commemorating the capture of Cayenne, 1809. Obverse: The Regent's head (left), laureate. Legend: 'D : JOAM P : G : D : PRINC : REGEN : DE : PORTUGAL, &c.' (John, by the grace of God, Prince Regent of Portugal, etc.) Below: '1809.' Reverse: Inscription (within laurel wreath), '14 . JAN . 1809.' Legend: 'CAYENNA TOMADA A : OS FRANCEZES.' (Cayenne taken from the French.) The island was captured by a Portuguese force and 80 men from HMS 'Confiance'.
