A pair of sealskin over shoes reputedly found on Captain R. F. Scott's body

A pair of sealskin overshoes for use on skis reputedly found with Captain R. F. Scott's body. They are crudely sewn with a sealskin sole, canvas sides, and wooden heels sewn on with wire set in a groove. The soles are sewn on with twine; they have leather fastening straps with buckles, there is a webbing loop on the back of one and a leather loop on the other. A small iron plate is screwed to the heel of the right shoe. The hair has worn off most areas of the shoes.

It seems that these shoes were made at the hut at Cape Evans during the Antarctic winter of 1911. Teddy Evans and Taff Evans (not related) both spent time modifying various types of boots for use with skis and crampons. Scott’s team used specially made finnesko boots so the overshoes were made to go over these boots and attach to the skis. A photograph at the Scott Polar Research Institute by Herbert Ponting illustrates how these overshoes were designed to fit onto the skis and allow the wearer to continue to wear finnesko boots inside them:
