Medal commemorating Duca d'Abruzzi and his North Pole expedition, 1899. Obverse: Bust of the Duke d'Abruzzi in uniform and order (left). Legend: 'S. A. R. IL. DVCA DEGLI ABRVZZI.' Reverse: A man grasping in his right the boom of sail and in his left hand a tiller with a rope lashed to it; a dolphin holding a trident in its tail (right). Inscription (left), 'MENTE PENSO CVORE CONVINSE FORZA COMPT PERCHE ANCHE VNA VOLTA DALLA SOVRANITA DELL' VOMO FOSSE DOMA NATVRA.' (Mind conceived, heart incited, strength achieved, in order that once more nature be tamed by man's supremacy.)
