Legend: 'DESCOBRIMENTO DO BRAZIL GLORIA Á PEDRO ALVARES CABRAL.' (The Discovery of Brazil. honour to Pedro Alvares Cabral.) Left: '1500'. Right: '1900'. Reverse: Within a band with stars, a kneeling winged figure, crowned and draped, writing an inscription on a rock. Legend: 'INSTITUTUM HISTORIC . GEOGRAPHIC . IN URBE FLUMIN . CONDIT . DIE . XXI OCTOBRIS A . D . MDCCCXXXVIII.' (The Institue of Historical Geography was founded in the City of Rio in 1838.) Inner line: 'AUSPICE PETRO SECUNDO.' (Under the auspices of Peter II.)
