Medal commemorating the opening of the Kiel Canal, 1895. Obverse: Busts of the Emperor William I, Frederick III and William II of Germany conjoined (right) within a band enclosing legend and laurel garland. Legend: 'ERBAUT UNTER DEN KAISERN WILHELM I. FRIEDRICH III. WILHELM II.' (Built under the auspices of the Emperors William I, Frederick III, William II). Reverse: View of the canal and liner passing through it, a bridge over it with setting below the arch. Legend: 'DURCH DAS 'MEERUMSCHLUNGENE' LAND EINST ERKLANG'S IM DEUTSCHEN LIEDE'; 'TRÄGT NUN STOLZER MASTEN REIH'N DEUTSCHE FLUT OB HAMPF OB FRIEDE' (Through the flooded land which once rang with German song, now proud masts string out on the German waters whether for war or peace). Exergue: 'NORD-OSTSEE-KANAL 1887-1895'.
