Medal commemorating astronomers Pierre Jules Janssen (1824-1907) and Sir Joseph Norman Lockyer (1836-1920) for their spectroscopic observations (made separately) of a new element in the Sun's atmosphere that was later classified as helium.

Obverse: Bearded heads of Janssen and Lockyer conjoined (right), beneath, crossed laurel branches. Legend: 'P. C. JULES JANSSEN J. NORMAN LOCKYER.' Reverse: Cloaked Apollo in chariot drawn by four plunging horses (left). His head is rayed, and while he holds the reins in his left hand, his right hand points towards a flaming sun. Behind the group are the heavens with the signs of the zodiac of Leo (left) and Virgo (right) shown. Some stars. Legend: 'ANALYSE DES PROTUBERANCES SOLAIRES . 18 AOÛT 1868.' Inscription on the edge: 'CUIVRE.'
