The Testimonial Medal was presented to 357 Greenwich Pensioners who had served at Nelson's four major actions, with a gratuity of ten shillings. The ceremony was originally planned to take place in Trafalgar Square but was cancelled twice due to bad weather and complaints from local tradesmen. It eventually took place at the Royal Hospital, Greenwich on 2 April 1845. The Testimonial Committee of the Parishioners of St Martin's funded the award.
