Prize medal, Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce
Obverse: Head of Vulcan (L) Legend: "ARTS AND COMMERCE PROMOTED". Reverse: Legend: "TO MR.W.I.T.HOOD, R.N. MDCCCXXIV". Below: "SOCY. INSD. LONDON 1753". Within a wreath of oak leaves inscription: "FOR HIS IMPROVED NAVAL QUADRANT". Fitted with a loop and ring. The four medals MED0247-MED0249 in spite of mistakes in initials, were all awarded to William John Thompson Hood. Born 1794; Captain 1843. This medal was made by George Mills and the word 'MILLS F.' is engraved underneath the neck of the figure (the F. is for 'fecit', meaning 'made').
