Inscription on edge: 'Surgeon Vernon Lickfold Matthews. Admiralty Medal "Highest Award" September 1911'. (Annual prize for surgeons entering the Navy. Later both London (1908) and Greenwich (1912) examinees were included). V.L. Matthews (1883-1915) was lost at sea in HMS 'Viknor' in 1915.
