Prize medal, Haslar Hospital
Obverse: A trident and anchor enclosed by a naval crown (centre) decorated with sails; sprays of oak branches in background. Legend: 'Haslar Hospital'. Reverse: a flaming torch with entwining serpent; below, a laurel branch entwined by a ribbon. Inscription: 'PACISQUE BONI' (left) 'BELLIQUE MINISTRI' (right). Inscription on edge: 'Surgeon Vernon Lickfold Matthews. Admiralty Medal "Highest Award" September 1911'. (Annual prize for surgeons entering the Navy. Later both London (1908) and Greenwich (1912) examinees were included). V.L. Matthews (1883-1915) was lost at sea in HMS 'Viknor' in 1915.
