Lifesaving award
Obverse: Inscription within a laurel wreath tied with a bow. Inscription: 'PRESENTED TO SERGT. MAJOR A.J. BROWN'. Reverse: Inscription: 'FOR RENDERING GALLANT ASSISTANCE at the wreck of the “PRINCESS ALICE” SEPT 3RD 1878’'. Fitted with a ring and loop. Hallmarked.
The 'Princess Alice' was a passenger paddle steamer owned by the London Steamboat Company. On the return journey from a trip to Sheerness, she collided with the collier 'Bywell Castle' in Gallions Reach, east of Woolwich and sank with the loss of over 600 lives. Medals were awarded for lifesaving following the accident by the charity - The Association of British Hospitallers. 'Morning Post' 7 Sept 1878 p. 5.
