Henry Vernon Crew Fund Gold Medal 1914
Obverse: A lifeboat with a crew of fifteen proceeding to a wreck; clouds above. Legend: 'FOR HEROIC CONDUCT. WRECK OF THE ROHILLA'. Below, partly erased, incuse: 'J. STRAKER KAY'. Reverse: Within a bay wreath tied with a ribbon the arms of Tynemouth a miner (left) and a sailor (right) as supporters; above a crest, a ship; a motto: 'MESSIS AB ALTIS'. Fitted with a curved bar, cusped supporting a twist of rope and suspended from a blue ribbon. The hospital ship 'Rohilla' was wrecked off Whitby, Oct. 30, 1914 and 50 men were rescued by the Tynemouth RNLI lifeboat 'Henry Vernon'. Awarded to John Straker Kay (1871-1940) of Tynemouth, Northumberland - lifeboatman, fisherman and fish porter.
