Naval General Service Medal 1793-1840
Obverse: The head of Queen Victoria wearing a diadem and with hair tied in a knot. Legend: 'VICTORIA REGINA 1848'. On truncation: 'W. WYON R.A.' Reverse: Britannia seated on a sea horse, a trident in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. Exergue: 'W. WYON R.A.' Inscription on edge: 'JOHN SCHEFFER'. Inscription on bars: '1 JUNE 1794', 'NILE'. The medal is suspended by a plain silver clasp from a white ribbon edged with blue. John Scheffer is not on the medal roll although a John Shepherd is listed for both the Glorious 1st of June and the Nile - as Quartermaster on 'Audacious' at the Nile and as Midshipman at the Glorious 1st of June (they have separate entries on the roll).
