India General Service Medal 1908-35

Awarded to Herbert Henry Alexander (1899-1958). Obverse: Bust of King George V, crowned (left). Legend: 'GEORGIUS V KAISA-I-HIND'. Reverse: A fortress with mountains beyond. 'INDIA' within tied branches of oak and laurel below . Inscription on edge: '266009 PTE.H.H. ALEXANDER R.W. KENT R.' Bar: 'AFGHANISTAN N.W.F.1919'. Suspended from a cusped bar (ribbon missing) and fitted with an inscribed bar.

Herbert Henry Alexander was born in Malling, Kent, the son of a dairy farmer. During World War I, he served with the Queen's Own (Royal West Kent) Regiment, Kent Cyclist Battalion. The Kent Cyclist Batallion was mobilised in August 1914. Now joined with other cyclist battalions, it formed part of an infantry brigade sent to India in early 1916, where it served with the Indian Army in Waziristan and Balochistan on the Afghan frontier. The bar on Herbert Alexander's India General Service Medal is for participation in the 3rd Afghan War from 19 May to 17 August 1919. By 1939, Herbert Henry Alexander was working as a heavy motor transport driver. In 1926 he married Edith Mary Hodges and after her death in 1939, remarried Margery Lilian Kemp.
