Distinguished Service Cross
Obverse:In the centre of a plain cross pattee, a circle containing the crowned cypher of George VI "GRI". Reverse: Hallmarked. Suspended from a blue ribbon with central white stripe. In fitted box of issue.
Lieutenant James Leo Fitzpatrick RNR, DSC (1889-1961). Born in Waterford, Ireland, he was indentured as an apprentice in the Merchant Service on 10 April 1907, in London to the Anglo-American Oil Co.Ltd. He served in the Royal Naval Reserve during the First World War, with the rank of Lieutenant from 2 August 1916. He was mentioned in despatches for services in minesweepers, (mine clearing) 1 July 1918 - 31 December 1919. Also awarded the DSC for services in minesweepers (operations subsequent to 30 June 1919). After the war he was employed in the 1920s on ships owned by the Royal Mail Steam Packet Co. Canadian Pacific, and Lamport and Holt lines. He served as a master in the merchant service during the Second World War and lived in Royal Hill, Greenwich towards the end of his life.
