Mercantile Marine War Medal, 1914-18
Obverse: Head of King George V (left). Legend: 'GEORGIVS V BRITT . OMN : REX ET IND : IMP:' Reverse: Within a laurel garland in relief, the bow view of a drifter, a ship in the distance (right). Exergue: 'FOR WAR SERVICE MERCANTILE MARINE 1914-1918'. Inscription on edge: 'JOHN PETRIE'. Fitted with a bar and light green and scarlet watered silk ribbon divided by a narrow white stripe.
John Petrie was born 21 Jan 1888 in Aberdeen and died 1919-1929 in China. A certificate as First Mate in foreign-going steamships was issued in Aberdeen 27 March 1912. On 24 February 1919, he applied for a replacement having mislaid it. At the begining of World War I, he was employed on vessels trading between London and China belonging to Jardine Matheson's Indo-China Steam Navigation Company. From 28 July 1915 to 1 February 1916 he was mate on the Hospital Ship 'Garth Castle'. His two war medals were issued in 1929 to an Edinburgh address - the card marked 'Deceased'.
