Distinguished Service Order 1938-1948

Distinguished Service Order awarded to Chief Engineer Officer John Wyld Merchant Navy. The citation in the ‘London Gazette’ 6 November 1942 reads as follows: ‘For bravery and dauntless resolution…when an important Convoy was fought through to Malta in the face of relentless attacks by day and night from enemy submarines, aircraft and surface forces’. John Wyld was specially selected as chief engineer of the tanker ‘Ohio’ which sailed in the historic Malta Convoy. He had previously served as chief engineer on the ‘San Felix’ when she was torpedoed in the North Atlantic in 1941 and for his services in helping to bring the ship to Newfoundland he was commended in the ‘London Gazette’. Wyld worked for the Eagle Oil & Shipping Company for 40 years retiring as Engineer Superintendent in 1958.

The medal is in the form of an enamelled white cross edged in gold with a green central wreath containing the Imperial Crown in gold on a red background. On the reverse is the Royal Cypher within a green wreath on a red background. The ribbon has a wide central stripe of red edged with narrower stripes of blue. Inscribed on the brooch bars are, ‘JOHN WYLD’ and ‘1942’. It is held along with its fitted box of issue.
