Order of the British Empire, 4th class (civil)
Silver gilt cross patonce. Centre depicts joint effigies of King George V and Queen Mary surrounded by motto 'FOR GOD AND THE EMPIRE'. Reverse: Royal cypher 'GRI'. Ribbon is rose pink with pearl-grey edges. Awarded to Capt. Harry Allinson Moore, OBE, RD, RNR. Mounted on a bar with nine other medals MED1270-78.
Awarded to Captain Harry Allinson Moore (1885-1971). After the troopship 'Duchess of Atholl' was torpedoed and sunk by 'U178' on 3 October 1942, her master - H.A. Moore, successfully organised the abandonment of the ship and the rescue of 821 survivors with only four casualties. An emergency wireless set in one of the lifeboats successfully made contact with a wireless station on Ascension Island and a rescue vessel was able to track the signals.
