Obverse: Bust of France, laureate (left). Legend: 'REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE'. Reverse: An anchor with lifebelt and inscribed scroll superimposed and crossed flag and laurel branch behind. Legend: 'MINISTRE DE LA MARINE COURAGE ET DEVOUEMENT'. Inscription: 'J. MENNONS MAIN 1915'. Suspended by a loop and ring and a tricolour ribbon with gold embroidered anchor and a tricolour rosette. Fitted with a brooch buckle. In fitted case of issue.
Awarded to John Mennons Main ( (1862-1931) Master of the 'City of Nagpur' for his part in rescuing the passengers and crew of the French liner 'Euphrate' 1905, after the vessel ran aground at the entrance to the Red Sea in 1915.
