Engineer Commander Frank Sharphouse Moss (1870-1954) was born in Whitby, the son of surveyor James Moss. married Winifred Palmer in 1899 at Devonport . After early years in training, he served as Chief Engineer in battleship HMS 'Bulwark', flagship in the Mediterranean Fleet. during 1902-1904. He joined HMS 'Liverpool' at Barrow in Furness, a month before her launch, now with the rank of Engineer Commander. The light cruiser took part in the coronation review of 24 June 1911. During the early part of World War I, Moss served in HMS 'Swiftsure' until the ship was paid off in 1917. The battleship initially helped to defend the Suez canal and then was transfered to the Dardanelles squadron and took part in the attack on Fort Dardanos, the attacks on the Narrows forts and supported the landings. Moss spent the rest of the war in HMS 'Thunderer', deployed in the North Sea. He retired with the rank of Engineer Captain in 1920. Between the wars he lived in Cheltenham with his wife and two daughters and died at Lewes in 1954.
