Unidentified officer in a blue uniform
Oval miniature in gouache and watercolour on card set in a gilt metal surround with an outer band of brown velvet, the whole set in a rectangular wooden backing covered in brown textured paper imitating leather. The reverse of the frame is inscribed, 'From Mr Charles Field, 263 Upper Grosvenor Rd, Tunbridge Wells'. The sitter is shown head and right shoulder only, turned to his left but looking out at the viewer. He has short grey hair and sideburns and wears a high collared blue uniform with the insignia of a gold leaf with a tasselled tip embroided on it, and an epaulette on the visible right shoulder. Though the subject is presumably British, from the address on the back of the frame, and previous notes call the subject a 'naval officer' the uniform is not Royal Naval or that of the East India Company. It may be another merchant service dress (British or foreign) or a military rather than naval one, still to be identified.
