Sextant

The sextant has a blackened brass triangle-pattern frame with a wooden handle. The tangent screw and clamping screw are positioned on the back of the index arm. The sextant has four shades, two red, one orange, and one green, and three horizon shades, two red and one green. Index-glass adjustment is made by a screw and on the horizon glass by a capped milled knob and worm gear.

Attached to the sextant is a magnifier on an 85mm swivelling arm. There is also a threaded telescope bracket in two parts, fitted for correcting collimation error. It has perpendicular adjustment made by a rising-piece and a milled screw. The telescope is 185 mm in length with an inverted image. An extra drawtube is 78 mm and has an inverted image and two parallel cross wires. A second telescope is 83 mm with an erect image. The sight-tube is 83 mm in length and has a green shaded eyepiece.

The polished brass limb, the inlaid scale and the vernier are missing.

The sextant is contained in a square fitted wooden box containing a trade label for Hayes Brothers, James Street, Cardiff. The top of the lid has been replaced by plywood.
