Graphometer
Scale marked in half degrees, vernier reading to one minute of arc. Telescopic sights a later addition. An instrument used by surveyors to measure horizontal angles. Invented by Danfrie and described in his book "Declaration de l'Usage du Graphometre" Paris 1597. In use it was mounted on a staff and orientated by the small compass set on top of the instrument.
