Universal quadrant

Brass quadrant 9.75" (24.8cm) radius, graduated 0-95 by 15'. Fitted with an index bar (telescopes missing) carrying a vernier reading to 1'. A compass 3.25" (8.2cm) dia., graduated to 8 points and to 360 degs, is mounted at centre of quadrant. Brass T-shaped bracket for two spirit levels (levels missing). The quadrant is carried on a universal mounting consisting of a vertical and horizontal arc. The vertical arc is attached to an "A" frame mounted on a horizontal plate which can be rotated through 360 degs, graduated 0-180-0-180, fitted with a vernier reading to 1degree. All movement is by rack and pinion.
A popular tool used by surveyors for land measurement. This example has a compass for determining direction and a geared movement for fine adjustment.
