Night telescope

This telescope has a leather covered barrel and a single draw tube made of brass. The other brass fittings include a pivoted eyepiece cover, an objective lens cap and a sliding sun shade. The original fitted mahogany box also survives.

Inscriptions on the draw tube give the maker and indicate that it was 'THE NIGHT TELESCOPE OF HIS LATE MAJESTY William the fourth.' A further inscription states that the telescope was 'Presented by Rear Admiral Lord Adolphus Fitzclarence, to Captain W. Crispin R.N.' There is also a trade label of the firm Elliott Brothers inside the case, suggesting that they may have been the retailers or the firm responsible for some of the later engraving.
