Spyglass telescope
This is a non-achromatic, brass Galilean telescope with eight draw tubes. This type of instrument was not for making serious observations, but was a fashion accessory designed to fit in the pocket. This example is said to have been presented by Napoleon to Captain Stanfell RN of HMS 'Conquerer' at St Helena in 1818. It was presented to the Museum by Stenfell's great-grandson, Lt Colonel Hartopp Adderley Cradock in 1944.
