Night telescope

The tapering barrel of this telescope is covered in leather and has loops for attaching a strap. The single draw tube is made of brass and the other fittings include a brass screw-on eyepiece cap and a leather objective lens cap. The maker's name is inscribed on the draw tube as 'Thomas Jones & Sons / Charing Cross London'.

This telescope was designed for use at night. It has a large achromatic objective lens to allow as much light as possible to enter the telescope. The telescope doesn’t have extra lenses to correct the inversion of the image, since the more lenses a telescope has, the greater the loss of light. The production of inverted images is typical of night telescopes.
