Officer of the Watch telescope
This hand-held achromatic telescope is typical of the type used on board ship in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It has a silvered brass leather-covered barrel and fittings that include a pivited eyepiece cover, a sliding sun shade and an objective lens cap. There is a single silvered-brass draw tube.
The maker's name and serial number are engraved on the draw tube: 'ROSS LONDON No. 56968'. A second inscription - 'C.D. Carpendale. R.N. from L.L. 1913' - records its former ownership by Charles Carpendale, a Vice-Admiral in the Royal Navy.
